The Fiji team finished third and claimed the bronze medal at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) U17 Women’s Championships after beating New Caledonia 3-2 in Cook Islands yesterday.

Cema Nasau scored twice while the third was an own goal.

Despite the team failing to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Jordan, the players proved they have what it takes to compete.

Fiji Football Association women’s director Susan Wise said regardless of the outcome they were still happy how the team performed.

“We’re happy with the overall performance of the girls,”Wise said.

“They impressed us and did really well throughout the tournament.

“They learned and gained so much experience over the past couple of days.

“It is only the start for these girls and they will take what they have learnt from this tournament and use to help develop their skills because that is what we need.”

Fiji got off to a good start with Cema Nasau scoring the first goal for in the 5th minute. New Caledonia, however, equalised with a goal from Katinka Takamatsu in the 11th minute, 1-1.

Just before halftime, Fiji made sure they were in the lead with a second goal from Nasau in the 35th minute, 2-1.

New Caledonia were unlucky and failed to get composure as they scored an own goal in the 75th minute giving Fiji a 3-1 lead.

But a goal from Jackie Pahoa in the 88th minute was not enough.

Meanwhile, New Zealand won the OFC U17 Women’s Championships beating Papua New Guinea 8-0 in the final. New Zealand will play in the FIFA U17 World Cup in Jordan.
