The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has issued strong warnings against violations of biosecurity import procedures and the illegal import of food into Fiji.

This follows the discovery of illegally imported food items in local shops.

The discovery was made by the BAF Trade Facilitation and Compliance team, and since then, all items have since been confiscated.

BAF executive chairman Xavier Riyaz Khan said products containing animal or plant material may carry exotic pests and disease which could have devastating impacts on human, animal and plant health.

He said despite numerous warnings, businesses and individuals continue to bring in food and objects illegally which threatens the Fijian agricultural economy.

“BAF has always been very clear about what may or may not cross the Fijian border,” he said.

“With so much at stake for the country in terms of our economy, biosecurity and community safety, BAF takes a strict and uncompromising approach to those who break the rules.”

The BAF Trade Facilitation and Compliance team has been conducting regular surveillance of shops and supermarkets for any non-compliance or smuggled items which pose biosecurity risk.

Mr Khan said BAF will not accept any excuses for non-compliance to biosecurity laws adding all illegal imports will be confiscated by BAF and fines will be imposed.

He advised businesses and individuals to contact BAF Trade Facilitation and Compliance team for advice related to biosecurity import requirements and restrictions in Fiji.
