Young prisoners

Raymond Chandra,  Kamloops, Canada

The number of young men and women who are serving terms in the prisons and the number of students who drop out of schools in Fiji before reaching Year 12 are noticeably high.

Are these two problems somehow related? Is there a policy in the education system in Fiji that is badly failing in its purpose and sending large numbers of young men and women of Fiji in the wrong direction?

Keeping Fiji clean

Sofia Khan,  Suva

Despite the threat of heavy fines, the well-intended Litter Decree has failed miserably. The evidence is obvious with so much rubbish in public places – waterfronts, parks, roadsides and even right next to villages and settlements. This is not only unhygienic but it is giving Fiji a very bad image. I suspect that the failure is due to poor policing.

The Litter Prevention Officers may be too few – they are ineffective.

Could the authorities responsible consider training as many volunteers as possible to be litter prevention officers too?

They could be trained to make arrests. This will go a long way in keeping Fiji clean at minimal cost.

Whilst we must continue to teach our children the value of a clean environment, we must also teach the adults a good lesson through heavy fines.

Many will only change after they have been fined or jailed for litter offenses. We must all help keep Fiji clean.

VAT, tax fraud

Neelz Singh,  Lami

Tax & Vat claim fraud are the Issue to be dealt within our financial sector. Joint venture with FRCA, Commerce Commission and consumer council seem to relief but more perpetrators need to be brought within justice and face the full blunt from the law.

This should be openly discussed and naming the culprit will be a good idea. Maybe the true value and price will be revealed and how they repay our customers will a good question.
