The newly appointed Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Fiji, the Pacific and Australia, Samasundaram Skandakumar, met with the Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday.

The Attorney-General thanked the Sri Lankan people and its government for providing personnel for the Fijian judiciary.

“Many of Fiji’s supposed traditional allies forgot that an independent and capable judiciary is always critical to the well-being of the nation and maintaining the rule of law. Sri Lanka understood that and went beyond petty politics and we thank them for their wisdom, fortitude and genuine friendship,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

The two also held discussions on opportunities in trade and investment between Fiji and Sri Lanka.

The Deputy HIgh Commissioner Himalee Subhashini de Silva Arunatilaka Serasinghe also attended the meeting.

The meeting also covered potential new areas of co-operation that could be formalised through a memorandum of understanding between the two governments.

“Fiji and Sri Lanka enjoy a strong friendship, and there are further ways we can strengthen our bilateral ties. In April, Fiji Airways will begin flights to Singapore, opening new travel options between Fiji and Sri Lanka and increasing trade, investment and tourism opportunities,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Mr Skandakumar commended the Fijian Government on its political and economic achievements and said the Sri Lankan government and people would continue to provide  support to Fiji.
