Chess Gear For World Champs

Fiji is currently ranked 145th in the world out of 200 countries
The Fiji Chess Federation aims to send a strong team to the World Chess Championship to Azerbaijan in September.
Fiji has been attending the event since the 1980s and has contributed greatly to the development of the sport in the country.
Fiji Chess Federation general secretary Arvind Goru said Fiji was slowly improving and developing.
“The World Chess Championship has 200 countries taking part,” Goru said.
Contribution
“The Fijian National Sports Commission has provided $50,000 for our preparation and participation.
“We are a small federation compared to other countries such as Australia who has 3500 registered players or India with 34,000 whereas we have only 50 registered players.
“The sport has improved over the years; we are currently Number One in the South Pacific surpassing countries like Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Palau and Papua New Guinea.
“Chess has grown significantly in the country; we have managed to recruit new players as well as develop old ones.”
Fiji is currently ranked 145th in the world out of 200 countries.
Meanwhile, Goru has also praised the success of the 4th National Blitz Chess Championship which was held at TappooCity yesterday.
“More than 30 participants showed up and this blitz tournament is really good because people need to think fast in order to win a game in five minutes.
“It will be more competitive later on but I am pleased with the turnout and outcome of the tournament.” Edited by Osea Bola
