Mental strength and discipline will be the main areas that need to be improved if the Fijian Under-19 cricket team wants to be competitive on the international stage.

Fiji lost their third pool game against the West Indies by 262 runs after earlier suffering massive defeats to England and Zimbabwe in the ICC U19 World Cup in Dhaka. West Indies showed their class by scoring 340 runs in 50 overs while Fiji only managed 78 runs in 27 overs.

Coach Shane Jurgensen said the pool matches pointed areas that need fixing.

“Key areas that underpin everything are our mental strength and discipline,” Jurgensen said.

“We just have not been mentally strong during key moments of the game such as taking all of our catches, bowled better during the last 10 overs and had partnerships when we have batted.

“Therefore we still have not completed a full match to get ourselves into a position to have a solid performance or even a win. We need to complete a full match before we will improve.

“Certainly we are a little disappointed but we have shown we are not out of our depth being here.

“We have one of the youngest teams here and that together with our limited playing experience puts us a long way behind.

“There certainly needs to be stronger and more competition available for these young players within or outside of Fiji.”

Fiji will play in the Plate quarterfinals on Thursday.
