The Fijian Elections Office is investigating  whether the suspended National Federation Party held a press conference while announcing its suspension to reporters on Monday.

The matter also is expected to be forwarded to the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption, if a breach is noted.

The suspended party has already breached Section 26 (2) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree 2013 by submitting accounts to FEO which had not been audited by an accountant certified by the Fiji Institute of Accountants as having a Practising Certificate.

Kamal Iyer, speaking for the now suspended party said: “The party’s Registered Officer called the Supervisor of Elections asking him whether a pre-scheduled press conference could be held. His advise was we could not and that the media had already been informed of the suspension”.

Simultaneously, he informed everyone that the press conference had been called off because the party had received the letter of suspension.

However, Mr Prasad then went on to address reporters present and answered questions on the suspension and also on their previous decision to boycott Parliament. Edited by Filipe Naigulevu
