The mother of a nine- year- old girl who was allegedly raped in Nakasi last year took the witness stand as the trial went to its second day yesterday.

The trial was before Justice Salesi Temo.

The accused is Ilaitia Nalawa who is charged with one count of burglary, theft, assault with intent to commit rape and rape.

While giving her witness statement, the 32-year-old mother said she was worried about her daughter when she did not return from school at the usual time.

At around 3.25pm on the afternoon of July 7 last year, the victim’s mother said she kept going outside to look for her daughter on the road but could only see students from another school.

She said she had thought that the daughter was tired of walking and wanted to take a rest along the way.

At 4.05pm on that afternoon, she saw her daughter on the road. She informed the court that when her daughter drew closer to her, she saw her face swollen and the white ribbon on her hair was down, her hair was messy and she was without her schoolbag and shoes.

She also told the court that there was blood on her daughter’s left eye and also a black eye beneath it. There was also blood coming from between her legs and on her daughter’s top lip, she said.

The woman informed the court that as soon as her daughter saw her she cried and hugged her. She said she had thought that her daughter was hit by a car on her way home. While being cross examined by defence she informed the court that her daughter informed her that she had been punched by an iTaukei man.

Meanwhile, while giving her statement in court yesterday, the victim informed the court that she had seen someone on the afternoon of July 7 last year on her way home from school hiding in the bushes on the right hand side of the road wearing a black mask.

She said she was scared. The victim informed the court the man then allegedly grabbed hold of her from the back and covered her mouth. She told the court that the man then allegedly lifted her to a bush where he then pulled down her undergarment and tights.

She also informed the court that the man then pulled his shorts down and also his underwear. The victim will take the witness stand again today  before Justice Temo as trial continues.
