United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) Chief of Staff, Colonel Ro Jone Kalouniwai yesterday received the Force Commanders Commendation Award. He was also presented with the UNDOF service medal.

Colonel Kalounwai received his award and medal from the outgoing UNDOF Force Commander (FC) and Head of Mission, Lieutenant-General Purna Chandra Thapa of the Nepalese Army.

The Force Commander’s Commendation is only given to officers and soldiers with actions or performances that are considered well above the call of duty and significantly improves the performance of the mission.

Lieutenant-General Thapa congratulated Colonel Kalouniwai and thanked him for his tireless dedication and commitment to UNDOF since taking up the Chief of Staff (COS) post on January 14, 2015.

Colonel Kalouniwai’s term as the UNDOF COS has been extended for another year until January 2017.

The ceremony also marked the Force Commander’s Farewell parade in the Golan Heights.

Lieutenant-General Thapa will complete his assignment on February 7, 2016, a UN statement said.

Major General Jai Shanker Menon of India takes over as the Head of Mission and Force Commander. The announcement was made by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday.

In a statement, the UN said Major-General Menon brings to his new position extensive command experience and knowledge of peacekeeping affairs at the national and international levels.

Major-General Menon was Additional Director-General Equipment Management in the Indian Army. From 2012 to 2013, he was General Officer, Commanding an Infantry Division.

The UNDOF was established on May 31, 1974 by UN Security Council following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces in Golan.

Since then, UNDOF has remained in the area to maintain the ceasefire between the Israeli and Syrian forces and to supervise the implementation of the disengagement agreement.
