Perpetrators of domestic violence will have to be produced in court within 24 hours after a report is lodged and they are charged, says Acting Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho.

Brigadier-General Qiliho confirmed to the Fiji Sun that he had issued the new directive on Monday to all their four divisional offices.

“And this directive also covers Police officers,” he said.

“I have given clear directives as of Monday, that if any report is lodged in regards to domestic violence, perpetrators are to be produced in court within 24 hours.”

“Those within the Police force that are involved in domestic violence will also go through this process; so we are not going to be seen trying to save ourselves; it’s across the board,” he said.

Brigadier-General Qiliho said in the months of October to November last year; there have been an increase in domestic violence cases.

“This shows that people are confident to come forward and report the matter to us; most cases were not been reported before.

“We must thank His Excellency the President for including this issue in his Christmas and New Year message; and the Prime Minister, Attorney-General and the Minister for Education for reiterating on the issue of domestic violence,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

“Even though the number of domestic violence has increased; it is a sign of confidence. A report will be gathered to compare the number of domestic violence reported for the months of January and February,” he said.

Brigadier-General Qiliho said there was no excuse for any type of domestic violence.

“Using violence against women is unacceptable; there is no excuse to physically abuse women; this is not right,” he said.
