No Boycott

SODELPA MPs will not boycott this week’s Parliament sitting beginning this morning.

This is despite Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa’s strong expression of support for the three suspended National Federation Party (NFP) parliamentarians.

There was an attempt in an earlier Opposition caucus meeting to get SODELPA  MPs to show support for their Opposition partners. A boycott was even mooted.

This was followed by a video, posted on social media, by Ro Teimumu attacking the suspension of the NFP and its MPs – leader Biman Prasad, Tupou Draunidalo and Prem Singh.

She described the suspension as severe and savage. She also urged people to join with the Opposition parties to push back what she called the “anti-democratic actions of the Government.”

But some SODELPA MPs have privately expressed their concerns about the “over the top” remarks of Ro Teimumu.

They say a boycott of Parliament as a show of support for the suspended NFP trio is out of the question. This is an internal matter for the suspended NFP and it should sort it out, they feel.

SODELPA has learned from its previous experience that it did not gain anything from boycotts.

– The 2014 National Budget was passed easily because the Opposition was not in Parliament.

– The New Companies Act was also passed easily because of the Opposition boycott. Now the Opposition is complaining about anomalies.

– SODELPA Opposition boycotted a special sitting of Parliament  in 2014 in which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave an address. The suspended NFP MPs attended. Some SODELPA MPs questioned the motive of the suspended NFP regarding its commitment to Opposition solidarity.
