8 Accused Police Officers Suspended

The eight Police officers charged in relation to the death of Vilikesa Soko, have been suspended on full pay.

This decision was made by the acting Commissioner of Police, Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho on Sunday following a statement which was released last Friday by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Christopher Pryde.

Mr Pryde had decided to file additional charges against the officers and a soldier who were allegedly involved in the death of Vilikesa Soko.

Manasa Talala, Seruvi Caqusau, Kelevi Sewatu, Penaia Drauna, Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu, Pita Matairavula and Senitiki Natakasavu face the following additional charges:

– Attempted rape of Senijeli Boila

–  Sexual Assault of Senijeli Boila

– Sexual Assault of Vilikesa Soko

Brigadier-General Qiliho said the officers involved were part of a Taskforce Unit which focussed on combating violence against women.

“As a result of the proactive actions of this Taskforce Unit, these Police officers are also State witnesses in over 30 criminal proceedings.

“The Taskforce Unit is separate from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID),” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

He said the men would remain suspended until all legal proceedings were completed.
