Money Rush

When will people learn that money does not fall from heaven. Members of a mataqali (iTaukei landowning unit) have been excited about the prospects of becoming millionaires overnight. Someone had started a rumour that clan members were soon to share $57 million of land compensation that has been frozen for many years. They were told that only  mataqali members registered in the VKB (Vola ni Kawa Bula) would be entitled to their shares. It sparked a rush by parents who had not registered their children in the VKB to the Births Registry where birth certificates were obtained before the dash to the VKB office in Nasese.

It turned out it was not true. But a clan member said: “At least I got my children registered.”
