The President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konousi Konrote yesterday swore-in a new Resident Magistrate at the State House.

Magistrate Ropate Lomavatu took his oath before the Head of State in the presence of the Chief Justice Judge Anthony Gates, the chief registrar Yohan Liyanage and his family members.

The new resident magistrate started his career in the teaching profession with a certificate in primary school teaching from the Lautoka Teachers College in 1989.

He entered the legal profession upon completing his Bachelor of Law from the University of the South Pacific, where he later completed his Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

Magistrate Lomavatu is a member of the Fiji Law Society and during his legal career, served in various boards and was also a Solicitor at the Office of the Attorney-General.

He has been actively involved in reforming the laws in Fiji including the Family Law Bill 2000, Anti-Corruption Bill 2000 and reviews of the Penal Code 2000 and the Liquor Act 2000.

Magistrate Lomavatu has also been part of the restructure of Government departments including Ports Terminal Fiji Limited, Fiji Public Trustee Corporation, Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Water Authority of Fiji and other entities that were streamlined.

He has also litigated major cases as the State counsel and represented Fiji in many international forums as well as taught law on a part-time basis at several universities in Fiji.

Magistrate Lomavatu is married and has four children.
