Speaker Not Worried

Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni said yesterday she was not worried by attempts to move a vote of no confidence against her.
“Those things don’t rattle me,” she said.
She was responding to Opposition attempts to push through as motion in the Business Committee meeting yesterday.
This motion was defeated.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the motion was endorsed by the Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa.
“She wants to remove the Speaker from Parliament; I think she needs to re-look at herself first before she starts throwing people out.
“This talk of democracy that they talk about has limitations; you cannot just throw out the Speaker because you feel like it.”
Speaker Discontinues Wearing Wigs and Gowns
Dr Jiko Luveni will discontinue wearing gowns and wigs during Parliament sessions from this year either than ceremonial occasions.
While welcoming Government, Members of Parliament and visitors to Parliament House yesterday, Dr Luveni said: “As you could all see I had made a decision about the attire that represented the office and clerks of the Fijian Parliament.
“It is the tradition for officers of this house to wear formal dress similar to that formally worn by the speaker and clerks of the House of Commons, it is my intention to discontinue the wearing of wigs and gowns either than on ceremonial occasions,” she said.
