Two Biosecurity Staff Sacked

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has terminated two staff members for abusing the human resources processes and procedures and allowing terminated staff members to continue receiving payments.

BAF is working closely with a human resources consultant recruited by the authority to correct the errors resulting from the misconduct of the two terminated staff.

BAF executive chairman Xavier Riyaz Khan said that apart from the internal disciplinary process measures taken, BAF would hand over reports on the matter to the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) for an independent investigation to determine if any prosecution is necessary.

“The BAF board requires transparency, fairness and compliance with Fijian law and international best practices and standards.

“The board has brought in the Auditor- General’s Office and external auditors to conduct audits on BAF, and their reports revealed a number of discrepancies in our HR system that misrepresented our operational expenses,” Mr Khan said.

He said the terminated staff manipulated HR records to allow employees with expired contracts to continue to receive payments from BAF.

The terminated staff then compounded this failure when by directly breaching internal policies and standards when they knowingly made false or misleading statements and produced false or misleading documentation.
