A 21-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to six years, 11 months and two weeks in jail for rape.

The accused, a father of two, was charged with one count of rape. He appeared before Justice Achala Wengapulli at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

The court heard that the incident took place three years ago when the accused was 18-years-old. The court heard that the accused was intoxicated when his sister-in-law invited him to accompany her to a nightclub. The woman then went into the room where the accused followed and committed the offence.

While sentencing the man, Justice Wengapulli said the accused had breached the trust the victim had on him which had resulted in the woman being emotionally traumatised after the incident.

Justice Wengapulli said the mitigating factors were that the accused was a first-offender and was also a father of two very young children.

The man will be eligible for parole after five years.
