Avaiata Ketenilagi is proud to be inducted as the headboy of Labasa Sangam Primary School yesterday.

66 students were inducted as prefects.

“When I was in Year Three at Lautoka Central Primary School, I had a dream to become the headboy of the school one day,” Avaiata said.

“My parents always encouraged me to study hard and set good examples to my two younger siblings. My father is a doctor at Labasa Hospital and I want to be like him in the future,” the 12-year-old Kadavu lad said.

“Being a headboy means taking care of my colleagues and assisting the teachers in making sure that the school runs well.

“I am honoured to be chosen as the headboy and this has brought pride to my parents.”

Meanwhile, Shruti Vandhani of Tuatua, Labasa, said she was happy to be chosen as the headgirl of the prestigious school.

“Leadership comes with responsibility and accountability and I am prepared to uphold these,” the 13-year-old said.

“Being a daughter of a secondary school teacher, I am prepared to take up the challenges.”

The chief guest, Loganandan Ramanna, a former student and former headteacher of the school, told the prefects to uphold the ethics and principles of the school.

“Leaders must work together to take care of the 535 students and 20 teachers,” he said.

“That badge is not for decoration, it is meant for work to be done by leaders whom the teachers have laid their trust on.”  Edited by Maikeli Seru.
