Archbishop Peter Loy Chong reminded the congregation at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva of the importance of prayer and almsgiving during this time of the year.

“During Lent these are three things we should focus on; deeper route of prayer, being generous to the poor and doing some form of penance,” he said.

The Archibishop reminded hundreds of Catholics who converged at the Sacred Heart Cathedral yesterday to observe Ash Wednesday which marked the beginning of Lent.

It was an important day on the Catholic Church annual calendar.

Archbishop Loy said if one was doing all these and was not generous to the poor then all those efforts would be meaningless.

“If you remain at that level and don’t develop your prayers; if you are not generous to the poor then it is meaningless and does not touch the heart of the Christian life which is centered on God and being generous just as God being merciful,” he said.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.
