The Solomon Islands team remains the favorite in the 2016 OFC Futsal Championship after defeating rival New Zealand 4-1 at the Vodafone Arena last night.

Solomons head coach Juliano Schmeling said it was a tough encounter.

“Both were quality teams and trained well for the tournament.

“It was also good to see that both teams have the right mindset during the game,” Schmeling said.

Schmeling said even though New Zealand provided tough attacking line in few occasions but his players knew the right way to stop the Kiwis.

“It was a tough match, New Zealand pressured us in the second half but we managed it very well,” he added.

Despite the loss New Zealand Coach Scott Gilligan was happy with his team’s performance.

“I’m happy with the boy’s performance, we had a lot of chances but we didn’t take it.

“Now I will be concentrating on their passes off the floor, you got to manipulate where you want to take the ball and understanding certain movements off the opposition,” Gilligan said.

Kurukuru had a strong start from the opening whistle as they were able to maintain possession and provided strong defence which denied chances to the Kiwis.

Solomon led 1-0 at the breather after a stunning individual effort from Elliot Ragomo.

They further extended their lead with another three goals from Jeffrey Bule, Ragomo and Jack Wetney.

The Kiwis scored their lone goal by Mick Malivuk.

Meanwhile in the first match Vanuatu defeated New Caledonia 6-3.
