Plea deferred for Vasu, Kunatuba and Bhikha
Lieutenant- Colonel Ifereimi Vasu

The plea date for two Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) senior officers and a former businessman has been deferred.

Former Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu, former FCS director corporate services Peniasi Kunatuba and inmate and former businessman Dhansukh Lal Bhikha, appeared before Magistrate Makereta Mua at the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

The charges all relate to the Naboro Mart being operated at the Naboro Corrections Complex.

Vasu and Kunatuba are charged with one count each of abuse of office. Bhikha is charged with one count of aiding and abetting abuse of office and one count of obtaining a financial advantage.

The three accused were to take their plea yesterday, however there were further disclosures that still needed to be disclosed before pleas could be taken.

FICAC lawyer Rashmi Aslam informed the court that the acting Commissioner of Corrections has notified them that the first-accused, Vasu has been interfering with Prosecution witnesses.

Vasu’s lawyer Babu Singh told the court that although he understood the serious allegation levelled against his client and if there were any breaches, he would ensure this does not happen.

The matter has been adjourned to April 4 for plea.
