Talks are underway with stakeholders from the United States of America on the possibility of engaging Fijian workers in seasonal employment in California under the agricultural sector.

Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Semi Koroilavesau said in Parliament yesterday that he was currently initiating talks with stakeholders from USA.

He also said the Foreign Employment Services is reviewing its selection criteria to target the most disadvantaged unemployed persons living in the isolated rural settings of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and Maritime islands such as Lau, Rotuma, Kadavu, Beqa, Lomaiviti group, Cikobia Island, Qamea, Yacata and Yasawa group.

“The Australian Seasonal Worker Programme has included four other sectors namely cotton, sugar , aquaculture and accommodation.”

“This week the Australian Government further announced the expansion of the scope of the seasonal worker programme to cover all unskilled agricultural work.

“We plan to talk to the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development to seek their contribution in provision of assistance to help these workers start small commercial farms,” Mr Koroilavesau said.
