A former information and public relations officer for the Prime Minister’s Office facing bribery charges has been found guilty and was convicted yesterday.

Rudra Maharaj, who is charged with one count of bribery, appeared before Justice Priyantha Fernando at the High Court in Suva.

Justice Fernando said he has accepted the decision made by the three assessors and convicted Maharaj accordingly.

It is alleged that on September 28, 2013, Maharaj accepted an advantage of $2000 cash and two cheques amounting to $10,000.

The three assessors had found Maharaj guilty to the charge.

Defence lawyer, Iqbal Khan asked the Court for an extension to his client’s bail which was refused by the Court.

Justice Fernando said once his judgment was made and he convicted the accused accordingly, his decision meant that the accused would then have to be remanded in custody until his sentencing.

The matter has been adjourned to next Tuesday for sentencing.
