Ministry To Probe Zika Cases Here

The Ministry of Health is currently investigating two new cases of Zika.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Evlyn Mani, last night confirmed that the two cases were presented with Zika-like symptoms and their blood samples have been taken while investigations continue.
Zika is a viral disease that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, primarily the Aedes species of mosquitoes that also transmits Dengue fever and Chicken gunya.
Meanwhile, Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate, in one of his ministerial statements in Parliament last week, revealed that there were two cases of imported Zika virus reported in Fiji last year.
This, he said, were from two infected travellers.
Mr Usamate also reassured Parliament that Fiji was intensifying surveillance activities of suspected cases.
Dengue fever
Ms Mani also confirmed that 12 new dengue fever cases were reported in the Northern Division last week.
“This takes the case number of dengue to over 100 from January 1 to date,” Ms Mani said.
