Qiliho: Rape Is Sickening
Acting Commissioner of Police, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho.

The Fiji Police Force will work closely with psychologists to understand why rapes are committed in this country.

Acting Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho made these comments after a 29-year-old father was arrested for allegedly raping his seven-month-old daughter.

Mr Qiliho said the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was also briefed on this case.

During discussions, it was suggested that psychologists work with Police to understand why such heinous crimes were committed.

“This is sickening to say the least. We need also now to understand why such crimes happen. It is sickening,” he said.

The father has been charged with two counts of rape by Police at the Nadi Police Station.

It is alleged that the man had raped his seven-month-old daughter on two occasions since October 2015, when his daughter was two months old.

The accused remains in Police custody and is expected to be produced at the Nadi Magistrates Court soon.

“We would like to plead with mothers or guardians to be mindful of their children, especially the vulnerable group. We request that mothers continue to examine and monitor children’s behaviour as such behaviours may give away signs of being sexually abused,” Brigadier-General said.

“It is also important that they continue to talk to their children about safety tips and encourage them to confide in someone they trust so that they would be able to report sexual abuse cases to Police.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators of such offences to task and those caught in the act will face the full brunt of the law,” he said.
