Spain Gears For West Sevens

The Spain national sevens team is gearing up for the inaugural West Sevens Series in Nadi next weekend.

Team spokesman Ingancio Martin said the tournament would provide Spain’s first test after three weeks of intense preparation at the Uprising Beach Resort in Pacific Harbour.

“We look forward to putting in place all the things we have learnt and worked for during our stay in Pacific Harbour,” Martin said.

“We want to fix the weaknesses and flaws at the Waimanu tournament.”

Spain’s preparation includes playing against the Uprising Beach 7s team. They will have sessions with the Vodafone Fijian 7s squad in camp today.

After coming second in the European 7s last year, Spain will play in the Olympic repechage in Monaco in June where they are likely to face Canada, Samoa and Russia.

“We are preparing for repechage in June as being at the Olympics will mean the world to sevens in Spain.”

West Sevens tournament co-ordinator, Biu Tadranu said Spain’s participation would boost the tournament.

“It will be a good platform for local players to muscle out with our international guests and to help them in their preparation for the Olympics, as well as getting back into World Sevens Series as a core team,” Tadranu said.

Twenty four teams will compete in the main men’s category, 12 teams in the men’s second category, six teams in the U20 and the women’s category will have three teams competing.
