A-G Meets Climate Change Ambassador

The Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum met with the Ambassador Chief Negotiator for climate change in Singapore, Kwok Fook Seng.
They discussed issues overall pertaining to the Paris agreement. The A-G informed the Ambassador of the Fijian Government’s initiative to establish a unit within his chambers to research and elucidate legal matters emanating from climate change which may not necessarily be addressed by the current discourse.
These include issues such as climate change refugees and their rights, matters pertaining to territoriality and internally displaced persons.
The AG said: “While some of these matters may not necessarily be matters that are current and not necessarily fall neatly within the issues affecting only Pacific Island Countries, they are nonetheless pertinent. And Fiji being at the forefront of raising awareness about climate change, in particular, through the Prime Minister, is well placed to engage with countries throughout the world to start thinking outside the box.”
The Ambassador commended this new initiative by Fiji and agreed to work together with this unit.
The Ambassador also shared with the A-G, Singapore’s policies in the areas of resilience, mitigation and adaption.
