Defence lawyer, Iqbal Khan yesterday asked the court to be lenient in sentencing his client, Rudra Maharaj.

Maharaj who was the former Information and Public Relations officer at the Prime Minister’s Office is convicted of bribery.

 

Charges

Maharaj had accepted an advantage of $2000 cash and two cheques amounting to $10,000 on September 28, 2013.

While giving his client’s mitigation submission, Mr Khan said Maharaj was a man of good character and had assisted many in the communities at large including children.

Mr Khan told the court that his client did not benefit from anything and the complainant also did not lose anything from the offence committed.

He also disclosed to the court that his client used to receive $20,835 as annual salary and owned a house and a vehicle.

Mr Khan also told the court that all his children were working and assisting their mother.

Maharaj has been further remanded in custody awaiting his sentence tomorrow.
