The Attorney-General and Minister for Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, held bilateral meetings with the Singapore Minister for Transport, Khaw Boon Wan, following the Aviation Leadership Summit 2016 in Singapore.

The A-G informed the Minister of the unique challenges that Small Pacific Island Countries need to address particularly on the shortage of appropriate resources and inter-island air transport limitations.

Discussions were held regarding Fiji hosting the regional meeting next month for the Small Pacific Island States to finalise the region’s position for onward submission to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (‘ICAO’).

They also discussed collaboration between Singapore and Fiji in the formulation of submission that the proposed formula by ICAO to determine a country’s civil aviation carbon emission footprint would grossly disadvantage a number of States including the Pacific Island countries.

The A-G and the Singapore minister agreed to further collaborate in the areas of capacity-building and technology in the aviation sector.
