Seventeen Fijian firefighters are attending an intensive four-day training conducted by experts from Japan.

This is part of the National Fire Authority (NFA) partnership with Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and Osaka Municipal Firefighting Department (OMFD) from Japan.

The Rescue Techniques Follow-up Training, conducted by experts from OMFD, started at the NFA Headquarters, Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

JICA Fiji resident representative Hiroyuki Sawada said: “The training will further enhance firefighters’ competencies in rescue and disaster management.”

The firefighters will be trained on road accident rescue, high angle rescue, low angle rescue and other rescue techniques.

Mr Sawada said JICA was proud of their close collaboration with NFA in assisting Fijian firefighters to undergo training courses in Japan.

“This follow-up training complements the training held in Japan. This is the first in-country training conducted by Osaka Municipal Fire Department.”

NFA board member John O’Connor, while thanking JICA, said: “Such training is very important in the development of our firefighters.”

Thirty-six Fijian fire officers had attended training in Japan since 2000 to 2015 organised by the Matususaka and Kitakyushu fire departments.

About 16 had attended courses conducted by the Osaka Municipal Firefighting Department in Japan.

This is the first time Osaka Fire Department is conducting training in Fiji.
