New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully met with Members of the Opposition yesterday.

Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa and Opposition Whip Ratu Isoa Tikoca were both not present at the meeting.

Minister McCully stated that the meeting with Members of the Opposition was an important aspect of his visit.

“I am very pleased that we had the chance of meeting with the Opposition. Meanwhile we studiously avoided getting involved in domestic politics which is not something New Zealand can concern itself with,” Mr McCully said.

Importance

“This is an important phase of development for Fiji in a sense that you have got a relatively new Parliament; you are trying to build the strength of that institution and the other institutions that work around Parliament.”

Mr McCully said the New Zealand government would continue to work directly and indirectly with Fiji to strengthen how Parliament works in Fiji.

Opposition member Viliame Gavoka said the Leader of Opposition Ro Teimumu is away in Levuka on bereavement.

“We spoke on a number of issues about the employment opportunities in New Zealand; about the scheme that is now in place and that Fiji continues to benefit from that and we are very grateful of that,”Mr Gavoka said.

“We outlined to them some of the concerns the Opposition had and the need for more capacity-building.

Mr Gavoka stated it was a good meeting.
