Police officers are often left traumatised when attending to road accidents and having to deal with family members of those who die on our roads, says Police director traffic control Senior Superintendent Mahesh Mishra.

“Our officers are often left to pick up the limbs of people after such accidents; literally pick up the pieces. No officer wants to go to the families of these people who lose their lives in accidents to tell them about this. It is very traumatising for our officers,” he said.

Mr Mishra remembers when he first attended a fatal accident scene in Navua in 1980s.

“A young man, while overspeeding, had lost control of his vehicle and his life. As a young recruit, this was my first fatal accident scene and to date I can still remember the face of that young man. But, worse was going to his home to inform his parents that their only son had died,” Mr Mishra said.

He has urged family members to take action now and stop their loved ones from over speeding or driving recklessly.

“Police officers are peace officers. If you know any of your family members have a habit of driving fast, let us know. We will not arrest them or punish them, instead, we will come over to counsel them.

“Maybe one counselling session will be enough to save one life. Thousands of people have been left behind after their family members, often the only earner in the family, dies in such a senseless manner.

“This is a concern for all of us, for you and me. We are here to help. Reach out to us and where possible, we will help. Think about your family members who will have to suffer the consequence.

“It only takes a split second of wrong decision-making and people lose their lives.”

He has urged people not to become a statistic in Police files.
