Rewa Rice Limited will open its very own rice dryer today.

The company chairman Raj Sharma had confirmed the Permanent Secretary for Public Enterprises, David Kolitagane, is expected to launch this event.

Mr Sharma said the dryer was brought in from China and is installed in their Dreketi mill to assist the farmers.

He added: “What has happened is the farmers have been complaining about drying their rice paddies, farmers don’t have that much of space to dry rice on the farms so they can immediately harvest and bring it to the dryer.”

Rewa Rice is expecting to mill 1,200 tons compared to last year’s 750 tons and the previous 450.

Mr Sharma said: “We are planning to increase it this year depending on the production from the farmers and the utilisation of the machines that is being supplied.”

He mentioned the farmers were paid $750 per tone for the rice paddy and this is supported by Government as a subsidy to encourage farmers to plant more rice.
