Taniela Vinaka from Namara, Tailevu, was yesterday named as the headboy of Bhawani Dayal Arya College in Nasinu.

He leads 108 prefects who were inducted by Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji (APS) executive officer, Sunil Arya.

Taniela told the prefects: “Firstly always abide by the oath. You are not swearing that oath in front of everyone, but in front of God Himself.

“Secondly carry out your roles and responsibilities faithfully and wholeheartedly for the quality of a leader is reflected in the standards you set for yourself.

“Lastly, lead by example as we are to be the most disciplined students in the school,” he said.

School principal Bijen Singh shared a few challenges the prefects might face and how they should respond to them.

“You are to be strong, but not rude, be kind but not weak, be bold but not bully, be thoughtful but not lazy, be humble but not timid, be proud but not arrogant and have humour without folly,” Mr Singh said.

He said the prefects were selected because of their discipline, academic record, behaviour, and their participation in school activities.

“Leadership is a word on everyone’s lips. The young attack it and the old grow wistful for it, the parents have lost it and Police seek it, experts claim it and artists spurn it while scholars want it,” Mr Singh said.
