Mr Koroilavesau addresses issues raised  by employees

It is important for every worker to know their rights, says Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Semi Koroilavesau.

Mr Koroilavesau, while speaking at the ministry’s public consultation, said many workers whether permanent or casual needed to be aware of their rights as workers.

“Right now 90 per cent of the issues we are dealing with are on informal workers or casual workers whose rights, they feel, have been abused and this is due to the workers not knowing their rights,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

“The rights of the Fijian workforce are now stronger than ever before and Government has brought about these changes to protect the rights of employees. However, we would not be able to do anything if the workers themselves do not know their rights.”

Mr Koroilavesau added that employees, in fear of victimisation, refrained from speaking out on certain issues such as those relating to abuse of rights.

“If you feel that your rights are being abused, please do let the ministry know so we can take actions against these employers and businesses because we do not have the authority to come to any business house and take action without a complaint,” he said.

“We are currently finalising our public relations teams to go to all towns, and districts to ensure that all employees are well-versed with their rights.”
