The former information and public relations officer at the Prime Minister’s Office, Rudra Maharaj, has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison.

He was also fined $2000.

Maharaj, who was charged with one count of bribery, appeared before Justice Priyantha Fernando at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

While delivering his sentence, Justice Fernando said public officers were meant to serve and assist the public of the country and not to act to the detriment of the public.

He also told the accused that he was expected to serve the public with utmost confidence and trust. However he said the accused acted to the contrary and breached the trust bestowed on him.

“It is the bounded duty of the court to impose appropriate punishment to such offenders who hold high public office to deter other public officers from committing such offences,” Justice Fernando said.

Maharaj had accepted an advantage of $2000 cash and two cheques amounting to $10,000.

He will be eligible for parole after serving three years and six months.
