Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday supported the Fiji Sun campaign to create public awareness about road deaths.

Expressing his concern about the loss of nine lives so far this year, Mr Bainimarama said more should be done to make people aware of the danger on our roads.

He suggested that all drivers should undergo a defensive driving course. They should go through it before their licence was renewed. New drivers should also attend the course before they are issued their licence.

He was in Namena Village to open the Naiutuutu Settlement electricity grid project.

Mr Bainimarama said he was concerned with the statistics on overspeeding and reckless driving. They are linked to most fatalities. Of the 82 drivers regarded as responsible for fatal accidents since 2014, only eight had not been previously caught for reckless driving, speeding or other offences.

He said more public awareness should be created to deter drivers from committing these serious offences.

Naisa Tuinaceva, Land Transport Authority chief executive officer, said he supported PM’s call.

He said they had been focusing on repeat offenders to undergo the course. He said it was a good idea to extend it to all drivers.

Minivans

Mr Bainimarama, meanwhile, said minivan operators in Tailevu should be allowed to run their services. He was told in Namena that minivan operators were facing difficulties from stiff competition by bus operators. Mr Bainimarama said minivans should be given space to survive.

Mr Tuinaceva said buses should only operate on their scheduled routes and could run 23-seater mini-buses. He said they could not go lower than that.
