The director for National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Akapusi Tuifagalele yesterday issued a national alert on Tropical Cyclone (TC) Winston.

He said TC Winston was a big one and people should be prepared at day time.

Flash floods should be expected.

“If you need to move, do so during the day and not at night,” he said.

Mr Tuifagalele also urged mariners to take heed of TC Winston warning.

The latest weather report indicated that TC Winston was moving close to the Fiji Group and was expected to affect parts of the central division including Kadavu and Suva.

“Both the Nadi Weather Office and disaster officials are closely tracking the movement of the cyclone which could bring about flash flooding and strong destructive winds. While the cyclone is a Category 4, the momentum of its movement has the potential to later develop into a Category 5,” the report added.

Mr Tuifagalele said he had been liaising with the Minister of Education on the evacuation centres.

He also urged members of the public to stock up on groceries and necessities for the cyclone period.
