The National Federation Party (NFP) will pursue their legal challenge against the Registrar of Political Parties Supervisor, Mohammed Saneem.

The challenge follows Mr Saneem’s earlier decision to suspend the party on the grounds that NFP was in breach of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures Decree.

Mr Saneem said the Registrar had discharged its functions in ensuring that the law was complied with.

“The NFP have remedied the breach of the law and they have been immediately reinstated as a Political Party. They are fully aware that they had contravened the law and that is why I took steps to remedy the contravention,” Mr Saneem said.

“In our correspondence to NFP, we had clearly established the breach and also clarified their doubts and inaccurate legal interpretations. The FIA had also clearly explained the position in terms of the Auditor not having the necessary legal certification.”

Mr Saneem said any action in court would require necessary consideration as and when it is served on them.

NFP Leader Biman Prasad said the party believed that it was unnecessary for Mr Saneem to take such actions.

“We have also challenged his notice that we were restricted from various political party activities during the period of suspension. We do not believe the law allows us to be restricted in that way,” Mr Prasad said.

“We believe it is important for these issues to be resolved by the courts and this is to ensure that everybody including the Supervisor of Elections to understand how the Political Parties Decree should operate in a democracy.”
