The Divisional Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea has strongly urged members of the public living in low-lying areas in the North to move to higher grounds before dark as TC Winston begins to intensify.

Mr Vocea said all district emergency operation centres in Labasa, Seaqaqa, Bua, Savusavu, Taveuni, Saqani and Tukavesi have been activated.

Also, 210 evacuation centres in the Northern Division are now open to the public.

“All provincial administrators in Macuata, Bua and Cakaudrove have been directed to advice the Rokos to inform turaga-ni-koros of all the localities of the evacuation centres,” Mr Vocea said.

For those living in Labasa, the Civic Centre in the town and All Saints School are open to house families living in flood prone areas.

Families that need to be evacuated can contact the Divisional Emergency Operation Centre on the following numbers:

– 8283952

– 8811322,

– 8811005

“Be very well prepared for the strong winds and heavy rain that is coming for the next few days”, said Mr Vocea.

He added for those that do not have proper hurricane shutters to be proactive and move to a better house in the village, and movement at night should be restricted as it can be risky.

The Northern Division is expecting to experience TC Winston from tonight and continuing to Sunday 21st February, 2016.
