To save themselves from the destruction of Tropical Cyclone Winston, 26 families took shelter at Chauhan Memorial Primary School in Lami last Saturday.

There were 76 adults, 52 children and 13 infants who were from settlements in Vesari, Belo, and Waigasua.

Samabula Police Station officer Sebasitiano Baleisuva, who lives in the area said: “We started evacuation from Saturday morning when the warning was given.

“Since Friday night, the school manager was here and helping the families to evacuate,” he said.

“Families evacuated in the school are safe.

“We will go back to our homes once it is cleared by National Disaster Management Office. “The families came prepared to the evacuation centre.”

Meanwhile, Mr Baleisuva said some families went back to their houses after being informed that the roofs of their houses were blown away.
