Jope Tubuna, 35, of Gaributa Settlement in Navua was still trying to recover from the trauma after his house was demolished by Tropical Cyclone Winston last Saturday.

“One big bang and it was all gone,” Mr Tubuna said.

Mr Tubuna described the horror of how he lost 30 years of hard work when his house and belongings were destroyed within minutes.

“I was sitting with my mother, Senai Tubuna, and around 8 o’clock we could feel the winds getting stronger and stronger suddenly we heard a shuddering crashing sound as the roof of my house started tearing away.”

“Within seconds the roof of my house was completely ripped off and blown away and it flew 70 metres into the bushes nearby,” Mr Tubuna said.

Once the roof flew off he knew he couldn’t do much so he took his whole family to the nearby rice factory for shelter.

“As we were still moving the walls collapsed leaving us no time to save any of our other belongings; the only thing that mattered at that time was my family’s safety.”

He said while he was glad they were safe he was also saddened at losing his house.

“How will I rebuild my house now from scratch,” Mr Tubuna said

Mr Tubuna is requesting the Government and non-governmental organisations for assistance in his time of need.
