A Year Nine student of Ratu Kadavulevu School described his experience during the height of Tropical Cyclone Winston as one he would never forget.

Charlie Yan, 15, a student under Ma’afu House, said their dormitory was struck by a coconut tree last Saturday night.

“I’ve never experienced such a thing before. We were all scared because most of us were new students here,” Charlie said.

“When we heard the tree fell we thought the building would collapse. All of us started shouting and screaming.”

He said senior students of the house were evacuated to another dormitory after the incident.

“We then gathered in our dorm and sang hymns and prayed. This will be etched in my mind forever and will serve as a memory of my first school year here,” he said.

The school’s library, athletes’ dormitory, Year 10 classroom, dispensary and some teacher’s quarters were also damaged.
