A woman is lamenting the loss of her grandson reported drowned in Kuku, Nausori yesterday.

Isaac Awil Chand, 10, went out for a swim at a nearby river with his family members at around 11am and went missing about half an hour later.

His body was discovered a few metres down the river.

Grandmother Ana Vatumawa, 65, said: “I raised the boy when he was only nine-months-old and losing him just breaks my heart.

“I have been grooming my grandson to become a business man and to continue looking after our Taxi business and he’s gone; I cannot believe he’s really gone,” she said.

Ms Vatumawa said  her grandson was playing around in the house when his grandfather sent him to go and call his cousin to help them clean up the compound.

She said her grandson chose to stay back while his cousin came.

“Around midday, I heard my daughter-in-law Maca Mekemeke (Isaac’s mother) came running as she was looking for my son, I asked her what was wrong and she told me that my Sake has drowned.

“I couldn’t believe what I just heard I felt down and started crying, I still couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“It’s too soon, my baby is a bright and smart boy and he wanted to become a teacher when he grew up,” she said.

Grandfather Ami Chand, 62, said his grandson was very hardworking, loving, caring and responsible student.

Isaac was a Year Five student at Nausori District School and the was eldest of three children.

“Isaac was a bright student in school and last Friday we celebrated his 10th birthday,” he said.
