In the midst of Cyclone Winston’s wrath, when the people of Fiji are on their toes fighting for survival and saving each other’s lives, an elderly woman lay on her bed awaiting what turned out to be the last day of her life.

Seventy-six-year-old Gangamma trapped inside her own home, unable to escape, died helplessly at her family home.

Her home in Dreketi Village, Ra ,was fully destroyed by Cyclone Winston. When Fiji Sun team visited her home yesterday, nothing but shambles of her house remained. Her neighbour, Amresh Kumar said Ms Gangamma had been bed -ridden for years.

Ms Gangamma lived with her daughter-in-law and her sister in their family home.

Mr Kumar said: “We felt the cyclone attack at about 5.30pm and lasted about three hours. Everyone was stuck indoors.

“I had no idea they were all still trapped inside. It was on Sunday morning when the Water Authority team came in to check when I called out for her but there was no response.

“We went up to check and found her daughter-in-law in the bathroom, her sister under the table and Ms Gangamma in her bed dead.”

Ms Gangamma is survived by two sons.
