Labasa Hospital is the only medical service in the Northern Division that is fully functional, says Northern Divisional Medical Officer (DMO) Doctor Tevita Qoriwasi.

He told Commissioner Northern Joseva Vocea and all the Government heads of the departments during a briefing at the Macuata House in Labasa yesterday.

He noted that all other sub-divisional hospitals including Taveuni Sub-divisional Hospital was not operating as it normally would.

“The Taveuni sub-divisional hospital is partly operating. They are using generator, there are four bodies in the mortuary, and vaccines are well stored.

“The old nurses’ quarters’ roof is destroyed and nurses have been relocated to the hospital,” Dr Qoriwasi said.

“Nabouwalu sub-divisional Hospital service has been reduced further to one ward. Two bodies were transported to Labasa Hospital mortuary with their vaccines on Sunday.

“We hired a generator from a community in Nabouwalu for the hospital.

“Contingency plans have been in place for each unit in Labasa hospital as well as from the subdivisions.

“This includes preparation for staff on 12-hour shifts, emergency standby, provision of services, availability of supplies needed for disasters and vehicles.

“We are still contacting other health centres to compile our reports,” he said.
