‘The team should be okay and ready in time for the tournament’

The Telecom Fijian Warriors will hopefully march into camp today at the Pacific Theological College (PTC) in Suva if electricity resumes.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor said the effects of Cyclone Winston will not hinder the team’s preparation for the Pacific Rugby Challenge (PRC) which will be held on March 8 at the ANZ Stadium.

“Some of the players turned up and were about to march into camp today (yesterday) but because of power problems at Pacific Theological College they were told to go back home,” O’Connor said.

“I don’t think there is any hindrance to the team’s preparation. The boys who were present today (yesterday) had their training session and they will do so again tomorrow (today) morning.

“But the boys have been doing their individual training at their various centres and this camp is to basically bring everyone together.

“There are some players who have called in and said that they are facing some difficulties and we have allowed them to look after their families first and hopefully by tomorrow they should all be in camp.”

O’Connor said the team was looking to move forward despite the setback and work to prepare the team in time for the tournament.

“The team should be okay and ready in time for the tournament. Unfortunately no one planned for a cyclone and we just have to deal with the situation in front of us and move forward,” he said.

“The team will be in camp for two weeks where the coaches will work to mould them, now it is just a matter of bringing everything together.”

Samoa A, Tonga A and Junior Japan will start arriving in the country on March 5.
