Goundar Clears Air Over Sale Of Ferry

Renewed questions continue to be asked over the sale of the former Queen of Chilliwack, now known as MV Lomaiviti Princess III, to local ferry operator, Goundar Shipping Limited.

Peak Online reported that questions were being asked about the sale of the MV Queen of Chilliwack after ferry service on the Canadian Sunshine Coast came to a halt twice earlier last month and there was no replacement vessel available.

Before its sale last year, the MV Queen of Chilliwack served as a fleet replacement vessel.

According to the Opposition (New Democratic Party in British Columbia) side, there was no need for the vessel to be sold offshore at a cheap rate as the British Columbians who paid for the vessel and its repair needed it more.

But Goundar Shipping Limited’s owner, George Goundar, a former senior employee of BC Ferries, downplayed claims that he bought the vessel at a meager rate.

He labelled questions raised by the NDP Opposition as “dirty politics.”

Mr Goundar said the purchase of his new vessel was a “clear cut deal that went through a tender process.”

“There’s no market for this vessel out there in Canada. BC Ferries did the right thing of selling it, rather than having it scrapped. The vessel did not suit the Canadian market anymore as the cost of operating it was more. I do not see a problem with our deal,” Mr Goundar said.

“The Opposition’s concern came about when one of the vessels broke down and BC Ferries replaced it with a smaller vessel.

“They then questioned about the MV Queen of Chilliwack and found that it was sold to me. They also asked why the first choice of sale was to me because I had close ties with the company.

“The Opposition is just trying to play dirty politics. BC Ferries know what they are doing and to my understanding, they are building three more ships to improve their fleet.”

He added that the MV Lomaiviti Princess III will bring about improved shipping services to the local travelling public.
