Amother’s dream to see her only daughter become a teacher has been shattered.

Thirty-three-year old Asinate Busokisoki lost her six-year-old daughter, Inise Toganiyasawa, during the height of Cyclone Winston on Nasau Island in Koro on Saturday.

Ms Busokisoki, a single mother could not hold back her emotions while recalling her last moments with Inise.

She said around, 1pm they left their home to seek shelter at Inise’s uncle’s place.  By then the village was already been hit by strong winds.

“While at her uncle’s place, a huge wave hit. We then tried to go to another house on a hill but it was too late because another wave had hit and brought us out,” Ms Busokisoki said.

The two then tried to find shelter in a bathroom. This was however late as another huge wave came in, swept them and smashed them onto the walls of a house.

“Another wave came and took us down. The wall and the ceiling of the house pushed us down.” she said.

Ms Busokisoki said she held on to her daughter very tightly, not wanting to leave her.

“I tried all I could to make sure she went with me but unfortunately she was not able to.

“The most painful thing was; that wave took her away from me forever, my favourite daughter,” she cried.

“Inise told me she wanted to be a teacher so I have been saving a lot of money to make sure she achieves her dream job.”

Mrs Busokisoki said she still couldn’t believe what Cyclone Winston had left behind. She also suffered injuries to her leg after stepping on glass blades while trying to reach safety.

“I miss her so much. She was very close to me. Whenever I see these children here at the evacuation centre; it just brings back memories of her,” she said.
