Resilience of local communities often shines through during times of hardship and devastation.

The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Dr Ram Raju is determined to get Nadi town back on its feet by the week-end.

Mr Raju and his team toured Nadi Town, Martintar, Malolo, Navu, Togo, Wailoaloa, Nadi Back Road and Denarau and have seen damage to houses, fences, trees, vegetation, power and telephone lines etc.

“It was pleasing to see people out clearing the debris from their compounds and volunteers clearing the roads.

He said: “Destruction to crops, vegetation, livestock and infrastructure is expected to be the worst seen in many decades. This will naturally slow down our economic and business activities that were growing robustly with a lot of confidence.”

Nadi experienced two devastating floods in 2009 and 2012.

“The resilience, sheer hard work, wise thinking, confidence and positive attitude helped us towards success. Some migrated overseas and some moved to safer and secure grounds which are quite acceptable under the circumstances.

“Nadi Town Council were also quickly up to clear drains and debris and they are working round the clock from the Engineering Depot, FEA, Water Authority, Telecom and FRA staff were also out in numbers assessing damages.”

“I have been in touch with Hasmukh Patel (CEO, FEA) who has assured us of restoring power supply as soon as practicable. I’m sure all of you can understand the mammoth task that lies ahead.”

Chinese New Year and Business Forum

A fresh date has been set to hold the two events. Dr Raju said this is likely to be next Saturday. (March 5)

“The venue and program basically remains the same. Many had bought the tickets and we had received good level of sponsorship. This new date will allow everyone to recover and back on their feet.”

The Tourist Guide

The project by Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Tourism Council of Nadi has finally come to fruition.

The magazine will be launched on March 5 by Margaret Twomey, the Australian High Commissioner.
